How to keep your Jack-O-Latern alive longer

Tomorrow is Halloween which means another month has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean your Halloween spirit has to go, too. Keep eating pumpkin-flavored everything, keep drinking pumpkin beers, and keep your pumpkin friends alive.

Once carved, pumpkins don’t have much time before they start sinking into themselves and attracting flies, gross.

My heart-eye-emoji pumpkin!

Here is how to make sure your Jack-o-Lantern makes it to Thanksgiving! (well, at least into November)

  • After you carve your pumpkin, spray the edges of the cut areas with a bleach solution. To make the solution, mix 1 tsp of bleach mixed with a gallon of water in put into a spray bottle.
  • Coat the edges with petroleum jelly. This will seal the pumpkiny moisture in!
  • Keep your pumpkin out of direct sunlight during the day.
  • At night, either place your pumpkin in a bucket of water with a teaspoon of either vegetable oil or, if you have a larger pumpkin, make some room for it on a shelf in your refrigerator. The water will help keep the pumpkin from melting!

This is just one way to preserve. Check out a few other awesome ways to preserve your pumpkin that include white glue and an actual commercial pumpkin preservative spray here!
